The eighteen foot drop at low tide around this part of the Bay of Fundy reveals rock formations, assorted stones and gravels, sand bars, glossy seaweeds, and an opportunity to walk out and explore all of it. This view is from the southern end of Campobello Island. The reddish rocks are colored by their high iron content, and started as seams of volcanic magma. Appropriately, iron oxide is a predominant pigment in the painting, used not only in the reddish foreground but also paired with burnt umber, ultramarine blue, and dioxazine violet to evoke the grays of the fog and the darker granite in the middle distance. In the far distance is Quoddy Head in Lubec, Maine. Enjoy!
