On the northern tip of Cape Ann there’s an old quarry, now a state park, called Halibut Point. I wondered where the name came from until I read a marker, which informed me that it wasn’t named after a fish, but rather from the sailing term haul about, and this was the point of land marking where sail boats had to haul about. It’s that darn New England accent again. I’ve spent my whole life in Massachusetts and it still catches me off-kilter. Setting the record straight, and keeping to the original story, I decided to call this painting Haul About Point.
The view is across the quarry – you can’t see the sea, but there’s a whole lot of it over the rise, along with a breeze. Enjoy!
