Drifting – I’ve watched lilies in their passage across the pond when the wind is blowing. It is amazing how quickly and how far they can travel! In this painting (which began as a demonstration piece for my students) I wanted to capture movement, and the fragility of a flower as it scuds along the surface, pushed by sturdy lily pads. I tried to define the flower, but not so much that it felt static. So often good painting involves painting the subject then wiping it partly away, keeping just enough gesture and form to anchor the abstract underpinnings of the composition. Details below. Enjoy!
Lovely painting and it is good to see something drifting other than snow!
Oh do I agree!
